The collection of nine stories published in 1930 explores Mayan myths from before the Spanish conquest as well as the history of shaping the Guatemalan national identity. Paul Valéry wrote about the book: "I found it brought about a tropical dream, which I experienced with singular delight".
Miguel Angel Asturias Rosales, the Guatemalan poet, diplomat, novelist, playwright and journalist, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1967.
