Translated from German by Dali Panjikidze
A collage-style novel is written in the youth slang of the 1970s. Edgar Wibeau is raised in a small town in the DDR but after an argument with his supervisor, he settles in Berlin with his friend, believing that he can be free and achieve more. The young rebel discovers Goethe’s book about Werther, which becomes his favourite, but at the same time it impels the young man to feel constantly unhappy because he believes he is hugely underestimated. When testing his technical invention, he is killed by the high voltage, but the question remains whether his death was intentional or accidental.
