Translated by Guram Gogiashvili
The novel, published in 1984 in two different editions, Male and Female, became an instant international bestseller. Written in the form of three cross-referenced, often contradictory mini-encyclopedias, it refers to fictional sources, events and characters. The author has stated that the Khazars symbolically represent Serbs.
In the introduction of his novel Milorad Pavić writes: "No chronology will be observed in here, nor is this necessary. Hence each reader will put together the book for himself, as in a game of dominos or cards and, as with a mirror, he will get out of this dictionary as much as he puts into it".
