Pridon Khalvashi
17 May 1925 – 8 July 2010.
In 1957 he graduated from Maxim Gorki Literature Institute in Moscow and in 1959 from Batumi Pedagogical Institute. At various times he was the Chairman of Achara branch of the Georgian Writers’ Union and member of the Georgian Parliament. In 1979 he was awarded Shota Rustaveli Prize.
His first poem was published in 1948 in a poetry collection The Country of Roads. He is the author of 50 poetry collections, among them The Chorokhi Secrets; Rebuke; This Day; Worry; A Hundred Suns of Mum’s Heart.
On 17 May 2010 during Pridon Khalvashi’s 85th anniversary celebration in Rustaveli Theatre, his friend poet Mukhran Machavariani died while reading his poem. The fact affected Pridon Khalvashi so greatly that he did not recover from the shock. He died soon afterwards in his native village of Gegelidzeebi, in Achara.
