Translated by Paata Chkheidze
Sigrid Undset was born on 20 May 1882 in the Danish city of Kalundborg. She was awarded the 1928 Nobel Prize in Literature "principally for her powerful descriptions of Northern life during the Middle Ages". On the award ceremony the representative of the Swedish Academy described her as a “poetic genius whose roots must be in a great and well-ordered spirit.”
The publication of Jenny in 1911 was followed by a massive success and interest on the readers’ part. The novel depicts a tragic love story of a young Norwegian woman, painter Jenny. The sexual scenes narrated quite boldly in the novel have caused a never-ending debate among the critics.
