Translated from English by Tako Chiladze
The protagonist of the novel, Sebastian Barnack, a young poet, spends his holidays in Florence with his hedonistic uncle, who involves the young man in earthly pleasures. At the same time, Bruno, his father’s cousin, a deeply religious man, influences Sebastian more than he ever expected. After several unfortunate mistakes he makes, Sebastian takes care of dying Bruno who suffered much due to Sebastian’s wrongdoings. Eventually, the young man finds himself studying world religions in an attempt to understand the human nature.
