Knut Hamsun was already a well-known writer when he visited the Caucasus in 1899 as part of his Russian trip. His impressions were published in Denmark and Germany in 1903: In Wonderland and the play Queen Tamar.
The writer was impressed by the traditions and cultures of the places he visited. He believed the technological advancement would mar the local charm unless people took care of their own land.
The author of many novels, poetry, short stories, plays and the mentioned travelogue was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920.
