The poem, published posthumously in 1489, is believed to be written in prison Châtelet in late 1462 while Villon awaited his execution. The wry epitaph, as often referred to, it is Villon’s best known piece of poetry.
The quatrain was first translated by Davit Tserediani, then by Otar Chiladze, Murman Lebanidze and Vakhtang Javakhadze, the well-known poets. The present edition also includes translations by: Guram Gogiashvili, Dato Akriani, Vasil Guleuri, Dali Iashvili, Tamar Kotrikadze, Shalva Bakuradze, Lulu Dadiani, Andro Loritashvili, Ketevan Todadze, Bichia Tsereteli and Nino Reck.
