Mukhran Machavariani
12 April 1929 – 17 May 2010.
In 1954 he graduated from the Philology Department of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi University. His first poems were published in the student almanac Pirveli Skhivi in 1952.
His work experience included: the editor of the poetry section of Tsiskari (1957-1963), chief editor of the magazines Pioneri (1963-1964) and Dila (1967-1982), chief editor of the literary almanac Saunje (1982-1988). In 1988-1992 he was the Chairman of the Georgian Writers’ Union.
His first book Poems was published in 1955, two collections of his poems, The Red Sun and the Green Grass and Silence Without You in 1958. The latter was translated into Russian by Evgenii Evtushenko, for which in 1959 Mukhran Machavariani became the Laureate of the 7th Youth World Festival. His poems are translated into the Russian, English, German, French, Bulgarian, Czech and other languages.
