Translated from German by Nino Burduli
In 2011 the novel was awarded the Prize of the German Independent Publishers. It tells about a complicated relationships and painful love within a family. Stella, 26, is a professional working in Hamburg. She leads a relatively comfortable life with her family until her half-brother Iwo arrives after a lengthy absence. His appearance triggers highly emotional memories connected with their traumatic childhood.
Later, Stella leaves her husband and child to accompany Iwo to Georgia, where he is busy looking for documents of a certain family. Iwo is familiar with violence, betrayal and the bitterness of being given up for adoption. He hopes that together with Stella and by solving the mystery of an unknown family, he will be able to overcome the psychological problems and to finally forget the painful past.
The novel is a highly involving narrative, dwelling on the eternal issues of forbidden passion and leaving the past behind when one strives to go on with one’s life.
